Our must-have wine for the month

‘Focus on one thing and do it to the best of your ability’. This has always been Etienne Le Riche’s winemaking mantra … he’s made Cabernet Sauvignon his life’s work and his signature Stellenbosch Cabernet developed a deserved and enviable cult following. For 21 years, the Le Riche family, first Etienne on his own and later with his children Christo and Yvonne, have made it their business to produce the definitive expression of a Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon.

This month we’re raving about their incredible Le Riche Cabernet Reserve 2014 – their flagship wine, it’s 100 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and is the result of scrupulous vineyard selection, hand sorting, extended maceration and high-quality French oak. It’s a wine where Le Riche spares no effort or cost to ensure a wine of quality and consistency and is made to age …  a true investment. It’s classic Cabernet style … rich and elegant,  and will benefit from at least eight to 10 years maturation. Once you do open, it will be especially good with fillet or rump, on the coals or grilled. You’ll find it at specialist wine stores for between R500 and R580.

The backbone of the range is the Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 … supple, elegant and rich, with layers of fruit, this wine spent 20 months in French oak barrels. You’ll smell ripe cherries, fresh plums and an array of red and black fruit with hints of vanilla … mature it for four to eight years, and then enjoy with dishes like pepper-crusted tuna, lamb shank or boeuf bourguignon. You’ll find it for between R210 and R250 at your local bottle store.
