Celebrating World Cocktail Day with Bitters

World Cocktail Day; a day of celebration across the globe as mixologists and cocktail lovers alike come together over a flavour infused tipple – often with a local twist.

This year, World Cocktail Day falls on Sunday, 13 May… the perfect day to relax with a cocktail in-hand, whether indoors or out. Maybe you prefer the expansive views that mother nature offers or rather the vibe of an urban bar space, whatever your preference South Africa offers a variety of beautiful cocktail venues and an even greater menu of classic and contemporary cocktails.

And most of these use Angostura aromatic and orange bitters to add depth and flavour to their creations. In fact, any mixologist worth their salt will know of Angostura and the benefits of using bitters – an essential ingredient behind any bar!

In every major city in the country, you’ll find bars setting benchmarks with their unusual cocktail creations – a testament to the burgeoning SA cocktail scene on the global map. Two such trending and superlative cocktail bars are Sin + Tax in Joburg and Cause Effect in Cape Town, both of which have participated in The Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge 2018.

Now, especially for World Cocktail Day, each bar will be creating a truly South African cocktail using Angostura bitters, to be shared across the globe through The House of Angostura’s 80 Bars Around the World Showcase.

Sin + Tax is the ultimate in cool – a secret hideaway set in the heart of Rosebank, the bar is warm and inviting. Here Julian Short and the team are putting their heads together to create something special using only the Angostura products officially available in SA – aromatic and orange bitters.

At Cause Effect, situated on the trendy Park Road in Gardens, Kurt Schlechter and Marshall Siavash are creating something unique – as usual. Cause Effect is fairly new to the Cape Town cocktail scene but is nevertheless making waves with their traditional brandy-based cocktails infused with fynbos flavours and homemade elixirs. In addition, SA’s very own Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge 2018 (AGCC) national winner, George Hunter, will be participating in The House of Angostura’s World Cocktail Day activities as he invents a classic cocktail with a South African twist using Angostura bitters and Angostura Rum.

If you’re not able to get out and about on World Cocktail Day, you can still partake in the festivities by making yourself a classic cocktail at home. Stock up on Angostura bitters and try out the Sazerac – thought to be the worlds oldest cocktail, the El Draque – a precursor to the Mojito, the Martinez – ancestor of the Martini, and the Mint Julep – a refreshing muddle created in the 1800’s.
