Two great reads for the week

Two great reads for the week

Looking for good books to read? Start with these …

Ruda Landman, justly famous for her TV interviews, has turned her talents to print in Tell Me Your Story. She talked to 18 prominent South Africans and has produced a colourful mosaic of experiences ranging from changing careers to coming out, losing a partner or following a dream. Among the fascinating people featured in the book are Pieter-Dirk Uys, Gugu Zulu, John Kani, Jonathan Shapiro, Patricia De Lille and Wouter Kellerman. The 19th interview is with Ruda herself and it makes riveting reading. These stories by people who have, each in their own way, made a difference in our country, are tales to touch the heart. Tafelberg, R297.

If ever a woman was born with an exuberant  love of life and adventure, that woman is Kate Turkington. With two husbands, four children, nine grandchildren … and several lovers … she’s been there, done that in spades. In her third memoir, Yes, Really! she takes readers on the joyful ups and some heart-breaking downs of her life. Born in the East End of London, she and her sister were evacuated to East Anglia during World War II – a journey that heralded her extensive future travels. She lived in Nigeria and Northern Ireland before she and her second husband moved to South Africa. Kate has been a teacher, a radio and TV presenter, journalist and noted traveller. In fact there can’t be too many corners of the world she hasn’t visited. Readers will laugh, rejoice and cry with her when they page through this book – the story of a life well-lived by a woman in her 80s who’s eagerly looking forward to the next chapter. Tafelberg, R 277.
